One Bowl Cake- 1910 Mcalls book

This is by far the BEST cake I have ever made! From scratch that is =)
I was searching the internet for a delicious vanilla cake with chocolate icing and was making this cake for the 4th of July. I stumbled upon this blog and found the HERE

This is now my go to cake!

VERDICT: Extremely delicious! One of the BEST cakes I have ever tasted. Very moist and not too sweet but just enough flavor, the chocolate icing is to die for! Not too rich but just enough chocolate flavor.

Everyone that ate it kept "mmming" while eating it! I only have one more piece left and the whole cake was eaten within 2 days! That is how delicious this cake is. It will be one of my cakes that I will make often.

Enjoy!

Double pear salad Jello mold -Tested

I got this really neat fun festive recipe from this fun blog that I check out. She tests all different weird vintage recipes and she tested out this one..it looked fun enough so I also tried it out too.
You can see her tested Double pear salad on "The mid-century menu"
Thanks Ruth!

It was a simple easy recipe. Ruth stated that the recipe came from a fun church book from ridgewood kitchens and was published in 1934.

This recipe is like an Under the Sea salads. This is my first under the sea recipe ever tested! And was a little nervous tasting Jell-O with avocado even though I LOVE avocados! I never tasted lime gelatin either so this really was my first!

I took it out after I un-molded it and placed it on a cake plate.

My husband Joe was also nervous trying it but he went in for the kill! and boy did he love it!

Boy did Joe love it! I only took once little bite, it was OKAY for me. Not really loving the lime for me but the lime and avocado was good. He ate half of the jello!
He kept eating it and eating it and begged me to make it again!

Joe gives it a thumbs up!

VERDICT: Tastes good, avocado and lime gelatin mix well together even though it sounds strange.
If you like Lime then you will like this!

Banana Chocolate Cream Pie-1950 Recipe

Print Friendly and PDF I got this recipe from the 1950 cookbook Chiquita Banana Recipe Book. I found this interesting book at a flea market and I just loved the recipes inside. This was fairly quick to make.

Banana Chocolate Cream Pie:

1 1/2 Squares unsweetened chocolate ( I did not use unsweetened chocolate, I just used 2 whole Hershey bars instead)
2 Cups milk
3/4 cup Sugar
5 TBS Flour
1/2 TSP Salt
2 Egg Yolks, slightly beaten
1 TBS butter
1/2 TSP Vanilla extract
1 baked 9 inch pie shell

*Use full ripe bananas*

Directions:

-Melt chocolate in milk in top of double broiler (I do not have a double broiler, so I just melted it carefully in the frying pan)

- Beating until blended

- Mix sugar flour and salt, add to chocolate mixture, keep stirring until well thickened. Cook 10 minutes longer, stir occasionally.

- Stir hot mixture into egg yolks (I just added the egg yolks in the frying pan). Cook for 1 minute.

- Add butter and vanilla.

* At this point, I had some problems with this recipe. It had little lumps of flour in the mixture, it was not completely creamy..So first I whisked it A LOT! That worked a little bit but not much, then I put the chocolate mixture in a bowl and beated it with a hand mixture..that was okay but not great so I was whisking again and that helped some more but there was still lumps and those lumps drive me crazy!! So I took out my vintage blender and put it on high speed until all the lumps were gone and finally that worked!

-Cool thoroughly

-Bake pie shell and let cool, put a little layer of the chocolate mix on the bottom of the pie shell and then add cut up bananas for the filling and then add the rest of the chocolate mixture on top and decorate with cut up bananas all around pie, and whipped cream in the middle with a cherry.

* My second problem with this is that the pudding mixture didn't really get any thicker by letting it cool in the refrigerator, I checked after the first two hours of being chilled and it was still "loose" and although it was thick it would just fall a part when cutting into it for a slice...
I left it over night thinking that might help, NOPE! Still was the same..I even put it in the freezer for it to thicken and it helped but not much!

Verdict: MESSY! Not Pie like! All around it tastes really good! The home made chocolate pudding is good and bananas But it would fall apart and is not right for a pie, the pudding did not thicken and would be a big mess!
