Banana Chocolate Cream Pie-1950 Recipe

Print Friendly and PDF I got this recipe from the 1950 cookbook Chiquita Banana Recipe Book. I found this interesting book at a flea market and I just loved the recipes inside. This was fairly quick to make.

Banana Chocolate Cream Pie:

1 1/2 Squares unsweetened chocolate ( I did not use unsweetened chocolate, I just used 2 whole Hershey bars instead)
2 Cups milk
3/4 cup Sugar
5 TBS Flour
1/2 TSP Salt
2 Egg Yolks, slightly beaten
1 TBS butter
1/2 TSP Vanilla extract
1 baked 9 inch pie shell

*Use full ripe bananas*

Directions:

-Melt chocolate in milk in top of double broiler (I do not have a double broiler, so I just melted it carefully in the frying pan)

- Beating until blended

- Mix sugar flour and salt, add to chocolate mixture, keep stirring until well thickened. Cook 10 minutes longer, stir occasionally.

- Stir hot mixture into egg yolks (I just added the egg yolks in the frying pan). Cook for 1 minute.

- Add butter and vanilla.

* At this point, I had some problems with this recipe. It had little lumps of flour in the mixture, it was not completely creamy..So first I whisked it A LOT! That worked a little bit but not much, then I put the chocolate mixture in a bowl and beated it with a hand mixture..that was okay but not great so I was whisking again and that helped some more but there was still lumps and those lumps drive me crazy!! So I took out my vintage blender and put it on high speed until all the lumps were gone and finally that worked!

-Cool thoroughly

-Bake pie shell and let cool, put a little layer of the chocolate mix on the bottom of the pie shell and then add cut up bananas for the filling and then add the rest of the chocolate mixture on top and decorate with cut up bananas all around pie, and whipped cream in the middle with a cherry.

* My second problem with this is that the pudding mixture didn't really get any thicker by letting it cool in the refrigerator, I checked after the first two hours of being chilled and it was still "loose" and although it was thick it would just fall a part when cutting into it for a slice...
I left it over night thinking that might help, NOPE! Still was the same..I even put it in the freezer for it to thicken and it helped but not much!

Verdict: MESSY! Not Pie like! All around it tastes really good! The home made chocolate pudding is good and bananas But it would fall apart and is not right for a pie, the pudding did not thicken and would be a big mess!

  1. First of all-I love the look of this blog-ADORABLE! You really have a way with blog design :)

The pie-I think I have that same booklet! I do wonder if the extra beating might have factored into it not setting, but I really don't know. We don't have a double boiler either, so we just put a stainless steel bowl over a pot of boiling water, and melt chocolate that way. I also wondered about the egg yolks, did you have to temper the chocolate so they didn't scramble?

Your pie sure looks delicious though, even if it didn't quite set!

    1. Thank you for complementing about the blog! I sure try hard to make it look fun and very vintage ! =)

I hope you are following this blog because I will be having some fun recipes that I made for today and will post them tomorrow! And please if you have any recipes that you would want me to try I will be pleased to do so!! All is welcomed =)

The booklet is great!! I love all of the recipes in it and picked this particular one because my husband loves chocolate and loves his bananas and loves pie! So I figured this would be perfect!!

I am not quite sure why it didn't set I was sure bummed because it looked so pretty for the end result. Maybe because I put the mixture in the blender?? There was no other way to get those flour lumps out without doing that and those lumps drive me nuts!!

I however did not sift the flour so maybe that was a factor of why the lumps were there and why I had to put it in the blender and why it was maybe not thick enough to set!

I added the egg yolks right in the pan do if I scrambled them in a separate bowl and the. Added it to the chocolate mix it might have been better. I did exactly as the recipe said so I might need to do the extra steps and try it again!!

My husband ate it anyway just as pudding =)

  2. I agree, the pie looks great -- just like the original photo.

I think making the filling in the double boiler would have made a big difference. As Maureen said, you can improvise with a bowl over simmering water (don't let the bowl touch the water). With a double boiler, you're using diffused heat and it makes for more gentle cooking.

It still looks pretty. And I love your tablecoth!
